Advent
God does not wait for people to find their way back to Him. Isaiah pictures Him crossing the wilderness to fetch His exiled people from Babylon, paying their ransom in full so that His glory, not their effort, brings them home. Zechariah adds a further sign: a crowned priest who points to a coming ruler who will answer ignorance, guilt, and corruption all at once. Isaiah 42 names Him God's chosen Servant, filled with the Spirit, gentle enough to protect a bruised reed and strong enough to bring justice to the whole earth. Jesus fulfils every one of these promises. Advent is the season to prepare your heart for the God who pursues sinners and does not fail.
God crosses the wilderness to rescue exiled Israel from Babylon. Jesus fulfils that promise more broadly by bringing sinners home from sin and death.
Zechariah crowns Joshua, a high priest, signalling a coming king and priest. Jesus fulfils that sign, saving us from ignorance, guilt and corruption.
Jesus protects bruised reeds and keeps fading flames alight. His gentle strength brings God’s justice to people damaged by suffering and their own sin.
